Why AAUW NJ Sponsors Teentech

Jobs in the STEM fields are among the fastest growing, and generally have higher salaries than jobs traditionally held by women. So encouraging more girls to further their STEM education and pursue these careers is one way to address the AAUW objective of closing the gender pay gap.

Jobs in STEM fields require confidence in mathematical and computing skills, as well as the use of computers and technical equipment. A recent AAUW study, Solving the Equation: The Variables for Women’s Success in Engineering and Computing, stresses the importance of positive personal experiences with engineering and computing, and with women working in technical fields, as a way of overcoming the negative stereotypes and the, often unconscious, bias against women in STEM fields.
