Teentech Essex Community College 2015

On February 10, 2015, nearly 160 high school students and educators came to Essex County College for a day of hands-on workshops designed to stimulate interest in high-demand, technology-based careers including: food chemistry, forensic technology, the mechanics of electric motors, rocketry, robotics, 3-D printing, and technology-based medical care using life-like mannequin “patients”. Each student was able to take part in two of the seven workshops that were offered.Educators who accompanied the students had a hands-on workshop in the morning and an afternoon panel discussion where they learned about various paths to careers in STEM, the many advantages of Essex County College, and the need for high school students to have a better preparation in math and quantitative thinking before starting college courses.The feedback we received from students and educators alike was very positive. Some of the comments from students were:“Proud to make a rocket that really worked;”“Great to experience a college environment;”“I will use what I learned to consider college majors and career choices;” “It was fun to work with students from other schools.”None of this would have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors!
